The Matthew Tradition: Moses New and Improved

Wednesday, April 25 - Friday, April 27, 2018

Retreat Description: Matthew's gospel is considered the most Jewish of the gospels. It refers to Jewish customs without further explaining them and repeatedly shows how Jesus fulfilled what the prophets has said in the past. The structure of the gospel can be divided into five major parts, framed by the infancy account and the Passion account. In these five sections Matthew challenges us to adopt the New Law that Jesus lays out in the Sermon on the Mount. Because of its five-part structure Matthew is sometimes referred to as the Pentateuch of the New Testament. We will explore how Jesus declares that one must internalize the Law and shows that realizing the Beatitudes in our lives will build the Kingdom of Heaven. Chapters 23 through 25 give us the final test to see how much more we need to grow or 'qualify' as hypocrites.

Presenter: Tony Verhallen is a retired high school teacher. He earned his MA in Theology from St. Mary's College, Moraga, CA, and his MA in History from California State University, Long Beach, CA. He taught Scripture, Ethics, and Church History at Pius X High School in Downey, St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, and Servite High School in Anaheim. He volunteers for the Western Service Workers Association, an organization that assists low income families and weekly conducts discussions and reflections on the Scriptures at St. Boniface parish in Anaheim.
